Got A Career Test?

One of the most common questions I get when people call for the first time is “Do you have any of those career tests that tell you what you should do for the rest of your life?”

This question comes out of a myth that tests can tell you what you should be doing for the rest of your life. The reality is that no one can tell you what you should do. In the hands of an experienced professional, a good career “assessment” (not “test”) is one of many tools to help you recognise a career direction. However, only you can make a career decision.

In my experience with my own clients and through discussion with other professionals across the world, an individual’s life stories show us more about what they are about and should be doing than anything else. The key is to learn how to sift through the stories of our lives to find this out. An experienced career professional can help you with this. A career assessment may be useful as well, however, this is not where the best information is found. The secrets are found in one’s own history.
