Over my life, I have been fortunate to receive sage advice from people I respect. A colleague once said to me that “everyone knows the road to be on, the challenge is to not let the distractions take us away from our journey”. I think my best teacher for understanding how to do this is not a human; she is my dog. I have a beautiful Border Collie named Zoe. In observing her over time I have come to realize that she really understands what it means to have a goal.
I have often been told that you get what you focus on, and Zoe is completely focussed. There are a number of things she likes to do, but it is a small and manageable number. The order of preference is:
- Play ball
- Stalk squirrels
- Run with me
- Eat
- Sleep
She only does one thing at a time and she is 100% committed to that outcome. When she is playing ball, that activity is her whole world. My observation is that being focussed gives her incredible satisfaction in life.
There is something there for all of us to learn from! In order to focus, we need clear goals!
