Living, Learning and Life Balance

June 6, 2017 By Rob

One constant throughout my life is that I am always learning. I am convinced that learning is at the core of what enables any person to thrive. This is also true for everyone one I know, including my family, friends, clients, students or peers. The difference that makes the difference is our learning.

One of the things that helped my learning in the career field is not the books and courses, but the lessons that my clients have taught me. I remember early on working with a woman who was recently divorced and needed income. She had three kids and was adamant that she could only work between 8:45 am and 3:15 pm each day. I was very skeptical about her goals but we worked together anyway. Although she was desperate for the money, she turned down all job opportunities that did not fit her priority. I guided her through an extensive networking campaign until she found a perfect fit. A small company was willing to give her a chance on her terms. It was a sales role and she excelled and out performed the regular full time staff. After a year they offered to promote her to a sales manager. She re-stated her terms; they hesitated at first but did choose to agree to her terms. Once again, she excelled. She was able to build the sales force, meet her targets and be there for her three kids.

I have always remembered this story as it taught me so many things. The main one is that I need to remain open to learning because the way I see things may not always be helpful. The other is never doubt the power of goals and persistence; they do make a difference!
